IMPORTANT NOTICE:
Effective June 4, 2012, Rhode Island has adopted new Child Support Guidelines in accordance with changes in the federal standard and an cost of living adjustment. Parties should make sure to get an accurate calculation shown to them by a Rhode Island Lawyer competent in Family Law Practice before deciding whether to attempt filing a Motion to Modify Child Support.
One major caution is that you should NEVER trust online calculators. The factors for child support are so numerous and the charts so long that it is unlikely that the programmer of any online calculator has taken the time and has the experience to make sure that the programmer has taken into account all the factors affecting Rhode Island Child Support Calculations. As both a family law attorney and programmer I began undertaking this endeavor 3 years ago and after three years I was still unable to program an online system with enough accuracy that provided the cross checking, calculations and base numbers provided to create an accurate guideline calculation form.
Just a wise caution for those who just think a quick calculator online will do the job. Most of the time... it won't!
